Smart Dining—Modern Thai

Set in a colonial villa on Ponsonby Rd, the once-revolutionary modern Thai restaurant of Mark Wallbank and Che Barrington has become such an institution that it’s sometimes easy to forget it’s there. To remember is to rejoice, however, because this place is an easy route to happiness. Begin with a pingpong long (Aperol, lemon juice, house-made jasmine and grapefruit soda) or a gin from the well-curated list, and then order shared plates as you go: perhaps pomelo and papaya salad with ginger, mint and toasted coconut betel leaf to start; then a teeth-sinking, coriander-heaped portion of soft-shell crab. Loosen your belt for meltingly tender, aromatic wild-goat massaman curry. Order more. The rules are loose and the service fast, enabling a chilled-out flavour bomb of an evening.

A favourite dish
Massaman curry of wild goat, pickled garlic, crispy fried shallots and roasted peanuts.
