When people ask us what our favourite Malaysian restaurant in Auckland is, we’ll usually say Petaling. It’s not been around the longest, or has the best version necessarily of any of our street-food favourites, but it’s the most consistent across the board: just saucy, tasty, well-executed dishes full of hot, bold, salty flavours. (And some people do claim you can find the best char kway teow in Auckland at Petaling — you be the judge.) We like coming here in bigger groups and sharing dishes family-style, especially the salted egg yolk prawns, homemade tofu with soy sauce, braised pork hock and Hainanese chicken. It’s a bonus that the service is particularly good here, too.
