Coffee Supreme

Located in a tiny slip of a shop in Avondale, Burnt Butter Diner doesn’t even have a coffee machine. You’d think that would be an issue for our flat-white-obsessed nation, but it still manages to pull in the crowds. That’s thanks to a lot of things, including the indulgent — though never too sweet — and nostalgic baking of co-owner Claudia Long (who sells her cakes under the Sweetcheeks name); the excellent, punchy cooking of co-owner Ryan Pearce; and the warm hospitality fostered by both of them. Burnt Butter follows the philosophy of doing the simple things well, and the menu reads like a dream — a collection of tasty things that we think every single person on Earth would like to eat (“cake for breakfast”, “chilli fried eggs”, “OG grilled cheese”).
