What is the saying? Good things come to those who wait? Over the past few weeks at new birria joint Broke Boy Taco, every day upon opening at 5pm there’s already a line snaking out the front. To me, that’s a signifier that it’s either very good or very hyped. In this case, I think it’s a bit of both. The place is essentially fast food — everything is packaged to go, but there’s a small amount of seating inside for those who want to stay. The menu is concise, with just three offerings and add-ons. I’ve heard there’s also a ‘secret’ off-menu quesadilla but this foodie stuck to the two dishes that have made them Insta-famous: the birria tacos and the birria ramen. (Birria, for those who don’t know, is a spicy, savoury stew of marinated beef, goat, lamb or chicken from the Mexican state of Jalisco.) The tacos ($7 each or $25 for a plate of four) are delicious — juicy, rich, super-flavourful. I suspect you’d start to feel ill if you had more than a couple, but the more-ish-ness of them is undeniable — maybe it’s worth it? Two people in the line told me I had to get the birria ramen ($20) — essentially this is pull-apart beef, consommé and cheese mixed into a cup of ramen noodles. It’s full noise and not for the faint of heart (I couldn’t even get half way through it), but worth a try, if only for the novelty. All in all, a fun, yummy cheap eat for those with a little patience. — Katherine Low
