Find Mug ’n’ Bowl Cafe & Eatery in the industrial zone between Mt Roskill, Three Kings and Hillsborough, sandwiched between a personal training studio and a kitchen design store. Here, you can have phở and bánh mì, among other things, for breakfast. The bánh mì comes in four variations, but we can’t seem to move beyond the roast pork. The sandwiches are based on specially made baguettes — crispy on the outside, soft on the inside — loaded with a peppery smear of pâté and a verdant heaping of fresh herbs. Then there’s the phở: bowls of deeply aromatic broth crowned with lavish handfuls of yet more herbs. While it’s nice to have a little break from eggs for breakfast, half the menu is dedicated to dishes more typical of local brunch offerings: eggs Benedict, a big breakfast and so on — meaning you can have eggs if you really want them. And you could pair whatever you order with a long black, but we recommend opting for one of their traditional drip coffees, served in a phin and sweetened with condensed milk.
