In a quiet corner off Upper Symonds St, nestled into the front of a strikingly modern building, you’ll find Benedict’s (easily identifiable by the cobalt-blue tables and chairs out the front). Their cabinet tends to be laden — with croissants, slices, scones and so on — which works very well for an afternoon tea eaten at one of their sunny outdoor tables. Benedict’s also boasts a full menu. As one might expect of a cafe of this name, the eggs Benedict there is as good as they get, served with thick, hand-cut bacon or halloumi. The salmon bowl is good, too, when we’re in the mood for a virtuous lunch. We like it all very much, but we think the real draw is the beautiful, minimalist space, spanning two expansive levels. The openness invites you to settle in, spread out, and enjoy lingering conversations over coffee or a relaxed brunch, without the rush.
