Small Mercies

Small Mercies is home to some of the most coveted doughnuts in the city. Inspired by kkwabaegi — the twisted Korean fried doughnut — the cafe serves up a range of flavours both sweet and savoury, from salted caramel and matcha tiramisu to hot honey cream cheese and brown butter cheese. They also do chapssal, which, though less fantastical looking, are a surprising delight. Coffee here is just as much of a reason to make a trip, whether you’re after something from the espresso machine, a batch filter or one of their Korean-inspired drinks, like the very en vogue iced einspänner — a hot shot topped with cool whipped cream. Ideally, you’ll dine in, where your doughnut arrives on a colourful plastic tray with playful, rounded plastic scissors for easy cutting — too cute.
