Pies worth travelling for.
As with many food discoveries in this day and age, we first saw Darren Jarrett’s pies on Instagram (for younger readers, it might have been TikTok), where the fervent Warriors fan posts videos of him making the whatever special pie he has coming up at his St Heliers cafe Ashby. We were particularly interested in Ashby’s collaboration with fellow Metro Eats restaurant Peach’s Hot Chicken and were delighted by the resulting pie, combining fried chicken, mac and cheese and Jarrett’s spot-on pastry. But the highlight of a recent visit was the slow-roast pork pie with a slice of crackling on top. So salty, so crunchy, so good.
