In downtown Auckland, Williams Eatery reminds us that breakfast food doesn’t have to be boring. Sweet and savoury toasts rotate all the time, involving sourdough or brioche bread topped with interesting elements. These always read so well on the menu — bright greens, buttery beans, mole, ganaches — that it’s hard to decide what to order, even though what is on offer is sharp and succinct. The great food helps, of course, but we think the real drawcard is the beautiful minimalist room — a simplicity accented by some plants and a painting or two — and the outdoor sun trap along the side deftly proves that, sometimes, Auckland isn’t half bad.
