An excursion to Cielito Lindo at its venerated premises in a pink, yellow and blue building just down the road from the Henderson dump is excellent for shaking off the humdrum dullness of everyday life. It opens only during the day, when the owners assemble serious renditions of burritos, quesadillas and tacos in four flavours — the best of which is surprisingly the nopales or cactus. All are bright, juicy and fresh-tasting in the way we hope for when eating this type of Mexican food. We’re especially fond of the sopes, an often-unsung menu item: soft, savoury corn cakes piled with chicken or minced beef or beans and then cheese and sour cream. Glorious, messy stuff. By the way, cielito lindo translates roughly to ‘lovely sweet one’ — we think that’s entirely fitting.
