There is perhaps no cafe in this city quite as dazzling as Bestie. Positioned in the high-ceilinged space at the back of the St Kevins Arcade mezzanine, its expansive windows frame a scene of the surrounding architecture and neighbouring Myers Park which feels decidedly oasis-like. This is especially true if you’re sitting at one of the coveted sun-soaked tables closest to the window. The menu here brims with personality, balancing cafe staples — think perfectly unadorned pancakes or poached eggs on toast, plus bacon, should you wish — and more unexpected options like mushroom and spinach oatmeal with chimichurri or their legendary cheese toastie, complete with quince jelly on the side. Service here is warm, bubbly and familiar, and the cabinet is packed with a bounty of artful cakes and sandwiches, with a good deal of vegan and gluten-free options. Nowhere catches the sunlight, and the cafe needs of Aucklanders, quite like this place.
