Steam Wand

We’re thoroughly charmed by this twee, knick-knack-filled spot on Manukau Rd. It’s got all the requisites for a beloved neighbourhood cafe: lovely people who care about what they do behind the counter, always excellent coffee (plus possibly the best matcha in town) and surprisingly affordable, comforting food. These food options are succinct, and often imbued with a Japanese influence. On the counter: excellent cheese scones, jars of ever-changing cookies, and cake loaves (sometimes infused with matcha or hōjicha). There’s a delight to the fluidity of the food here, a quality that only a truly homemade operation can pull off. The menu usually involves a seasonal soup or other special dish, but the staple is the made-to-order sandwiches — soft, pillowy things reminiscent of those you’d find in a Japanese kissaten. These are very well priced, and you can order them as a set with a scoop of potato salad and pickles for a few extra dollars. They pack them up very nicely, too — perfect for your picnic in the park.
