Silverlake Deep Fried Bread

Primarily a breakfast-and-lunch spot (please be warned it closes at 2pm), we’ve put Silverlake Deep Fried Bread on the list because it does the rare thing of off ering a Chinese breakfast from 8am onwards. The youtiao and “savoury round breads” have always been delicious, but Silverlake now also offers full meals, like braised minced pork on rice, curry laksa, dumplings and, of course, congee. Their Taiwanese-style congee with mushroom, bamboo shoot and shredded pork, with the addition of a side of youtiao and some soy milk, is the perfect breakfast. (There’s also the more ‘traditional’ minced pork with preserved egg.) Also get the soft tofu pudding to end the meal with.
