Most of our lives are spent rushing about, from one place to the next, so how nice it is when you find a cafe that invites you to slow down. That’s not to say Duo is quiet — there’s a lively hum of friendly service and a sonic clatter of coffee cups and plates. We like how the menu offers so many directions to explore. You might keep it classic with perfectly cooked eggs or French toast (Duo-style, though: custard-soaked brioche, brûléed). Or you might venture somewhere more unusual for brunch, with toast slathered in horseradish mayo and topped with raw market fish, or house-made mafaldine strewn with tuatua, both begging to be paired with a bloody Mary. From 2pm, when the evening menu starts, Duo transitions from cafe to restaurant. And if you’re there at the right time of year, please order the seasonally available courgette flower, stuffed with prawn and crayfish — we’re obsessed.
