Molten makes a very welcome return to our list this year. Owners Ben Blair and Sven Nielsen, along with chef Rensha Bouwer, have given this jewel of the Mt Eden Village a shake-up, combining the menus of the restaurant and the bar next door so you can now get excellent bistro meals and small plates on either side.

None of the mains costs more than $30 and a choice of three (generously proportioned) small plates costs only $35. Nielsen is a true wine expert and he’s usually working the floor, so if wine’s your thing, chat him up. He loves nothing more.

A favourite dish: the feasting menu (pictured), $49 for two courses, $59 for three courses, three dishes in each course.
