Finalist, Best Chef: Kazuya Yamauchi / Finalist, Best Service

Chef Kazuya Yamauchi learned to cook in Europe and it’s European food he presents here, albeit with some very beautiful Japanese touches. It’s fine dining right down to the white gloves — no one else in town is doing that. In fact, no one else is doing almost any of this. Astonishing degustations, with hours of work put into every little dish, making each one a revelation.

If you’re after sheer culinary astonishment, with impeccably good and very charming service to match, Kazuya, sited in the most unlikely premises on upper Symonds St, is your place.

A favourite dish: signature seven-course degustation, complete with amuse bouche, bread and “pre-dessert”, all for $95.
