A cafe reimagined

Oct 11, 2016 Cafes

Words and photos by Kate Richards.

After 18 years of running Frasers in Mt Eden Village, Sandra and Paul Fraser decided it was time for an upgrade. That old green café on the corner of Mt Eden and Stokes Rd’s has been given a new lease of life.

Sandra told me that in the months while they were closed, she’d often see forlorn customers wandering the streets of Mt Eden, looking for somewhere to eat. It was a tough time for regulars, some of whom have been going to Frasers every day for just shy of two decades.

The building dates back to 1906, and unsurprisingly the refurbishment hasn’t been without its challenges. During the course of the build their architect uncovered years’-worth of dodgy DIY, leaks, broken parts and at one point, a half-built staircase hidden in the roof. Sandra is more than relieved to be back behind the counter.

Much to the delight of regulars, the menu remains almost unchanged. You’ll be able to get old favourites – like Frasers’ bacon benny and their range of classic cakes – just now with modern tweaks. It’s the Frasers’ quiet nod to the changing landscape of this little old village.
