Metro exclusive: Watch a brand new sketch from Funny Girls season two

Sep 22, 2016 Film & TV

New Zealand sketch comedy show Funny Girls returns to TV3 on September 30. When the first season aired last year, it quickly found a following and won praise among critics, who shockingly concluded that yes, “girls” can indeed be funny.

As with last year, the show’s central thread revolves around the fictionalised making of the TV programme itself, with Rose Matafeo, Laura Daniel and Jackie van Beek in the starring roles. But this time the sketches are even edgier, more political in terms of commentary on gender roles.

To celebrate the season’s return, Metro has the pleasure of presenting a brand new sketch from the show. It’s a parody based on the observation that car commercials almost exclusively star men, writer Alice Snedden explains. “They’re based on the assumption that woman don’t drive trucks, or aren’t farmers. We thought we’d show up this old fashioned thinking by doing an ad parody, with a voiceover character who was sort of a lovable chauvinist and was genuinely surprised that a woman was behind the wheel.

“Having Rose be able to interact with the voiceover meant all sorts of fun could be had with that absurdity. Ad parodies can be tricky because you really have to match their original counterpart in order for the joke to stand out and the production team did such an amazing job of bringing it all together.”
