The Federal Street precinct boasts a new Chinese eatery
There’s a smart new restaurant on Federal Street: Huami, a contemporary Chinese eatery offering traditional cuisine with a modern twist. With an interior drawing inspiration from spaces in old Shanghai’s French Concession, the restaurant brings elements of classic China into the modern day. Well-known chef Nic Watt – who founded Japanese restaurant Masu, just across Federal Street – has collaborated with SKYCITY on the project with executive chef Jeff Tan, who has an impressive career in some of the finest restaurants in Asia and the Middle East.
The menu will highlight exceptional dishes from Chinese regions, including Guangdong, Sichuan, Huaiyang and Beijing. The focus is on using the best fresh seasonal produce and bold flavours in signature dishes including wood-fired Peking duck, handcrafted dim sum, braised New Zealand paua, and crayfish.
Adding to the ambience, New Zealand’s first wood-fired duck oven stands proud as a feature of the restaurant. In fact, all cooking spaces will be open to allow guests to enjoy the theatre of their dishes being prepared. Live crayfish and other sustainably sourced seafood will be on display in a floating two-tier feature wall so guests can select their seafood of choice and have it prepared fresh.
Opens Sat 1 Jul. SKYCITY, Federal St, central city
A new addition to the Viaduct
Simon Gault has a new venture: the opening of his relaxed bistro, Giraffe, which is bringing new energy to Viaduct Harbour. Named by his threeyear-old daughter Hazel, this all-dayer – designed by Paul Izzard – offers harbour views and informal, open-plan dining. A move away from his fine dining past sees a menu focused on provenance of the ingredients.

The full continental in Herne Bay
Owner Mariette van Steensel wants to bring a taste of the Netherlands to Auckland at her
new place, offering a continental breakfast, homemade granola, pastries from Phillipe’s
Bakery and specialty cheeses. Ease into your morning over a Kokako specialty coffee.

A smart team brings a game-changing restaurant to Herne Bay
It’s an all-star cast at this new Jervois Road local, headed by Melissa Morrow, Blair Russell and chef Sarah Conway of Ponsonby Road Bistro, with help from Nick Gallagher (ex-Depot and Culprit). Herne Bay favourite, Andiamo, has been transformed by Allana Owen (ex-Queenies) into a blushing cacophony of colour and fun. Less formal than Ponsonby Road Bistro (which they continue to operate), but no less thoughtful, the idea is to pop in any time for a snack, full meal or just a drink. The all day menu, including whole grilled flounder, chopped liver with boiled egg and a range of light salads, accompanies a comprehensive bar list and three Galbraith’s tap pours.

Pink hues and exotic eats arrive at Ponsonby Central
Mark Wallbank and Che Barrington have opened their fifth Auckland restaurant, Honeybear, a playful ‘fusion’ eatery inside Ponsonby Central. The highlight of chef Barrington’s share-style menu – which spans Sri Lanka, India and Myanmar – is the bargain $7 dosa with coconut chutney. If it’s a liquid dinner you’re after, either blend
your own gin and tonic, or choose a Maharaja cocktail from the kombucha-centric cocktail list.
Simon and Lee
Cultures happily collide at this new Parnell eatery
Prolific cafe owner David Lee (of Graham Street’s Major Sprout) has teamed up with Ollie Simon of Wellington soft drinks company Six Barrel Soda (and formerly Good One) to open a new cafe in Parnell, part of a larger redevelopment of a former carpet warehouse. The menu combines a Korean influence with cafe classics, like the big breakfast with miso pork, crab croquettes and anchovy butter. For lunch, try a bibimbap with house-made gochujang (a hot sauce) or a side of KFC (Korean fried chicken).
