1. Shaka Bowl Poké

It’s taken a while for poké to reach our shores, despite the fact the dish originates in the Pacific. The Hawaiian raw-fish salad now has an Auckland store dedicated to its greatness. Shaka Bowl started when surfer friends Justin Fong, Jade Tan Swea Phin and Rufus Chan began serving their raw fish and tofu bowls at night markets around town. The new store allows them to serve poké fresh to order, a lunchtime win for central-city workers.

The owners of Parlour, a minimalistic clothing boutique on High Street, are taking their first steps into the world of hospo with a new, 25-seat cafe overlooking the Domain and Auckland Museum. Leewah and Phiriya Anakakul’s travels in Asia inform a menu that features Korean barbecue beef burgers alongside Auckland staples such as smashed avocado on toast and tropical fruit smoothies.

3. Champ Canteen
17A Remuera Rd, Newmarket
Duke Tran (far right) and his mother Trinny Tran, owners of Mt Eden cafe The Return of Rad, are set to open their second site this week. Two grinders for two Rocket Coffee blends are just the start of precision-brewed espresso – the main drawcard of the petite cafe’s offering – alongside filter coffee, classic custard and jam doughnuts, and toasties with childhood-inspired fillings such as spaghetti and sausages.
